A shocking incident in Calgary's northwest has left a woman traumatized but alive, and a man dead, in what police describe as an undeniable case of self-defense.
The woman, in her 30s, was lured to a residence in the Edgemont community under the false pretense of a property showing. Little did she know, she was walking into a dangerous situation.
The Trap Unveiled
Shahbaz Ahmed, 48, had arranged a meeting with the woman, promising to show her a property. However, his intentions were far from innocent. During the tour, the woman's father, who accompanied her, was separated from her in the large house. This separation created an opportunity for Ahmed to launch an unprovoked attack on the woman.
A Fight for Survival
But here's where it gets controversial: the woman fought back. In a desperate act of self-defense, she managed to escape Ahmed's grasp and sought help from neighbors. Their quick response and call to 911 were crucial. Upon arrival, police found Ahmed in distress and pronounced him dead at the scene. The woman, although injured, was stable and transported to the hospital.
Acting Staff Sergeant Scott Guterson of the Calgary Police Service's homicide unit praised the woman's actions. "She did everything right. This is a clear-cut case of self-defense." He added, "The victim's actions saved her life and prevented further harm."
A Troubling Past
And this is the part most people miss: Ahmed had a criminal history. Last year, he faced multiple charges, including assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, uttering threats, and failing to comply with a release order. Despite these charges, he was acquitted twice in 2025.
Police confirmed that Ahmed and the woman had communicated about renting property in the months leading up to the incident, but they were not in a domestic relationship.
Guterson emphasized the importance of self-defense, stating, "Canadian law allows us to protect ourselves. Citizens have the same right to defend themselves as police officers." He believes the woman's actions prevented more serious injuries.
The woman's father witnessed the latter part of the attack and was unharmed. The victim's family is now caring for her, and police teams are providing support.
An autopsy was completed, but further details of the attack are being kept private to respect the victim's wishes.
