In a concerning development, TasWater is currently investigating two separate incidents of deliberate attacks on critical water infrastructure sites in Launceston. Over the weekend, the Bell Bay Water Treatment Plant fell victim to a break-in, resulting in extensive damage and the theft of crucial electrical and control equipment. Additionally, vandals gained unauthorized access to the Rocherlea reservoirs last week, where they lit fires and accessed the reservoir roofs.
Brendan Windmeyer, the General Manager of Operations at TasWater, emphasized the critical nature of these sites, stating that they are essential infrastructure. He added, "Damaging these sites can have serious consequences, including impacts on greater Launceston's drinking water supply."
The Rocherlea reservoirs play a vital role in supplying Launceston with an impressive amount of drinking water, equivalent to filling 22 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Meanwhile, the Bell Bay facility is instrumental in TasWater's real-time monitoring of water quality and sewage controls across Northern Tasmania.
Despite these attacks, both facilities remain operational, and there has been no disruption to water services in the region. However, Windmeyer expressed disappointment over the vandalism, stating, "While these incidents have not affected our ability to provide essential services to the community, vandalism of critical operational depots is disappointing and puts unnecessary strain on our teams."
