Meta's Superintelligence Push: 73% Capex Boost Explained | AI Race, Stock Surge & Future Plans (2026)

Meta's bold move towards superintelligence has investors buzzing!

The Superintelligence Push

Meta, the social media giant, is taking a massive leap into the world of artificial intelligence (AI). With a 73% increase in capital spending, they're aiming to deliver deeply personalized AI experiences to their vast user base. But here's where it gets controversial: this push towards superintelligence, a concept where machines could potentially outsmart humans, has sparked a talent war in Silicon Valley.

Shareholder Support and Market Response

Mark Zuckerberg's ambitious plan received a warm welcome from shareholders, pushing Meta's stock up by a whopping 10% in extended trading. The company's advertising revenue, its primary income source, surged by 24% in the last quarter, further boosting investor confidence.

Financial Projections and Challenges

Meta forecasts its capital expenditure for 2026 to be between $115 billion and $135 billion, primarily driven by infrastructure costs and higher expenses for AI data centers. This is a significant jump from the $72.22 billion spent last year and the expected $109.9 billion budget, according to Visible Alpha.

The company's late entry into the AI race has led to a doubling down on their superintelligence target. To achieve this, they're planning to build massive AI data centers and are prepared for substantial financial outlays to meet the increasing computational demands.

Funding the AI Venture

Meta has been funding its AI-related expenses through its thriving advertising business. Revenue from ads soared to $58.14 billion in the fourth quarter, up from $46.78 billion the previous year. This has allowed Meta to invest heavily in AI, with capex rising by 49%, outpacing revenue growth and leading to a drop in operating margin.

Competing in the Short-Video Market

In the past year, Meta has expanded its ad platform to include WhatsApp and Threads, directly competing with platforms like Elon Musk's X. Instagram's Reels continues to battle it out with TikTok and YouTube Shorts in the lucrative short-video market.

Valuation and Growth

John Belton, a portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds, believes Meta's valuation is not as demanding as it may seem. He highlights that the returns are substantial, coming from the core advertising business, which is being enhanced by AI infrastructure.

Microsoft's Contrast

In contrast, Microsoft, another tech giant, reported a 66% increase in capital outlay in the December quarter. However, its shares fell 6.5% after hours, as it only marginally exceeded estimates for quarterly revenue in its cloud-computing business.

Meta's shares, which rose 12.7% last year, trade at 22.2 times the estimates of its earnings for the next 12 months, compared to higher multiples for Alphabet, Amazon.com, and Microsoft.

Expenses and Talent Acquisition

Meta forecasts its total expenses for 2026 to be between $162 billion and $169 billion, up from $117.69 billion a year ago. This increase is primarily due to rising employee compensation as Meta spends aggressively to hire top AI talent. Zuckerberg has been paying top dollar to attract AI big hitters, reorganizing their AI efforts under a dedicated unit last year.

For the first quarter, Meta expects revenue between $53.5 billion and $56.5 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $51.41 billion. The company has beaten profit and revenue estimates for its quarter ended December 31.

And this is the part most people miss...

While Meta's superintelligence push is ambitious, it also faces capacity constraints and intense competition in the short-video market. The success of this strategy will depend on how well Meta can navigate these challenges and continue to innovate in the AI space.
