Liberty Furnishings Announces Relocation and Grand Sale! (2026)

A beloved furniture store, Liberty Furnishings, is on the move! But here's the catch: it's not by choice. The iconic Royal Welsh Warehouse, their home for a decade, has been sold to new owners with big plans, and Liberty Furnishings is not part of that vision.

For 10 years, Liberty Furnishings has called the Pryce Jones building, a Grade II-listed landmark, its showroom and design studio. Selling everything from beds and mattresses to living and bedroom furniture, it has been a staple in Newtown. But now, the historic building, once the headquarters of the world's first mail order company, has been sold to a Lincolnshire-based investor for £465,000.

The new owner, while keeping the details under wraps, has promised "exciting plans" for the property. And this is where it gets controversial: the new vision doesn't include Liberty Furnishings. Owner Nicky Gilligan was informed that once the development work begins, there won't be a place for her business.

"I have sadly been informed that the building's exciting new development plans will not be able to accommodate Liberty Furnishings once work begins," Nicky shared on social media. "With this news, I have decided to relocate and will announce our new plans soon."

But before they move, Liberty Furnishings is hosting a massive closing-down sale, clearing out their entire showroom and warehouses. It's a bittersweet moment for Nicky, who has loved her time at this location and is proud of what she's built. She's grateful for the support of her customers and is excited about the next chapter of her business, even if it means saying goodbye to this iconic space.

"It is a privilege to now be part of the history of this very important building," Nicky said. "Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to working with you on your interior projects for many years to come."

So, what do you think? Is this a sign of progress, or a loss for the community? Should long-standing businesses be given more consideration in development plans? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
