The mobile gaming scene has seen its fair share of retro revivals, but few can match the excitement of bringing back a rare fighting game from the early days of Japanese feature phones. Gundam VS Fighting Spirits Plus, a hidden gem based on the iconic Mobile Suit Gundam series, has been brought back to life by dedicated preservationists.
This one-on-one fighting game, released in 2009 for i-Mode compatible phones, lets players pilot giant mechs in intense 2D battles against iconic machines from the Gundam films and TV series. From the RX-78-2 Gundam to the Zaku II, it's a dream come true for fans of the franchise.
However, the game's resurgence is a testament to the hard work of the feature phone preservation community. Last year, members of the Keitai Wiki Discord managed to preserve the game, but it was unplayable due to a server connection requirement. Bandai Namco Games, the publisher, had discontinued the server, leaving players in the lurch.
Enter Yuvi, a ROM hacker and preservationist known for his work on fan translations and the revival of Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. He stepped up to the challenge, creating a new server to bring the game back to life. The result? A smooth and functional experience, as RockmanCosmo, a community member, praised, "This may be the best keitai fighting game we've preserved so far."
Players can now enjoy Gundam VS Fighting Spirits Plus via the Keitai World Launcher. While it's a bittersweet reminder of the passing of time, it's also a celebration of the dedication of those who bring lost gaming treasures back from the brink of extinction.
As we marvel at the revival of this classic, let's also appreciate the efforts of preservationists who ensure that future generations can experience the joy of gaming's golden age.
