Remember the last charts quiz? It was a hit! Some readers were thrilled, calling it "chart crime." Others, not so much, suggesting more preparation to avoid "sloppy" charts. One reader even called it "mean."
Okay, so the last chart was intentionally tricky. The X-labels showed 2021 twice and skipped 2025. This was mainly due to a glitch in our chart-building software, but we kept it in to spice things up. Sorry, not sorry!
Here's why: we had a good turnout, but few correct answers, and some… well, let's call it 'constructive criticism.' It was the perfect trifecta for an FT Alphaville charts quiz.
Let's dive into the solutions:
- First up, we have the share price of SanDisk/Jensen Huang's latest levitation trick.
- Next, we looked at the volume of Venezuela's self-reported oil reserves. This one definitely didn't have Alphaville humming Enya's 'Orinoco Flow' last week.
- Finally, the chart showing the share price of Meta Materials, a stock with a cult following.
Sadly, we couldn't find a price chart for its now-infamous preferred shares, MMTLP. Some believers still think it will recover, even though the company went bankrupt, and the equity became worthless in 2024. Last week, some of them even held a press conference outside the SEC, which amused Alphaville enough to include the chart of its common stock in the quiz.
This last one was tough. We only had two correct guesses from Ziyodulla Abdullaev and James Ritossa, and the winner is...
Congratulations to Ziyodulla, a frequent finalist and now a first-time champion! James, you'll have to wait a little longer before you have enough winner's tees to form a five-a-side team.
