Brutal Winter Testing: Pushing Lucid's EVs to the Extreme in Northern Minnesota
I embarked on an exhilarating journey to the frigid north of Minnesota, just a stone's throw from the US-Canada border, to test the limits of Lucid Motors' electric vehicles (EVs) in the harshest of winter conditions. In this adventure, I put the Air Pure, Air Sapphire, and Gravity SUV through their paces, and the results were nothing short of astonishing. But here's where it gets controversial—is Lucid's technology really that superior?
The temperature was a chilling -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and I was determined to experience the same conditions that Lucid engineers endure to perfect their vehicles. I began my journey at TRC Minnesota, near the picturesque town of Baudette. After a brief orientation, I was ready to tackle the winter testing of several Lucid models, including the tri-motor Air Sapphire, RWD Air Pure, and the highly anticipated Gravity SUV.
Lucid had brought along two benchmark SUVs for comparison, one from a renowned EV brand and the other from a traditional German automaker. Due to a delay in winter tire delivery, we decided to test all three SUVs on all-season tires to ensure a fair evaluation. However, I also had the opportunity to test the Lucid Gravity with Nokian winter tires, and the results were remarkable.
The winter testing began with rides in each SUV across various terrain courses, including treacherous patches of pure ice. While all three vehicles performed admirably in braking, the Gravity SUV stood out as the clear winner, especially when relying solely on regenerative braking without touching the brake pedal.
But the real test came when we took these vehicles to a ring of pure ice. The benchmark SUVs struggled, with one spinning out of control and the other locking up and sliding diagonally. However, the Gravity SUV demonstrated an impressive balance, never losing complete control and allowing for easy recovery. This is where Lucid's engineering prowess truly shines, as their team has invested countless hours in sub-zero conditions to fine-tune their EV architecture and traction control system.
From a consumer standpoint, the Gravity SUV offers a sense of safety and control that the other SUVs lacked. I would feel confident letting my loved ones drive it, even in challenging winter conditions. The Lucid Air Sapphire, known for its exceptional performance, also impressed me with its handling on snow and ice. Despite being developed for race tracks, it performed admirably in winter testing, showcasing its versatility and responsiveness.
Lucid's evolution of its EV architecture and traction control system (TCS) is a game-changer. While the Pure and Sapphire models feature Gen 2 technology, the Gravity boasts the latest Gen 3 system. This advanced traction control, operating at 1,000 hertz, is described by Lucid as "state of the art." Additionally, Lucid has co-developed a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system with Bosch, further enhancing stability. These innovations are seamlessly integrated into the Gravity, setting it apart from its competitors.
I captured extensive footage of the Lucid Gravity performing donuts in the snow, which I've affectionately dubbed "snownuts." The SUV's handling was exceptional, and I felt a sense of freedom and control even in the most challenging conditions. After my freestyle sessions, I took each Lucid model on a dedicated winter test track and performed hot laps, adjusting the stability modes to experience the full range of capabilities.
Lucid's control system is a masterpiece, providing a unique level of familiarity and comfort across all models. It balances torque, slip control, and steering with precision, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience. I was particularly impressed with the Gravity's ability to reel back understeer and bail out oversteer, giving drivers confidence in their control, even when sliding.
The Lucid Gravity outperformed the benchmarks in every aspect, and its technology is a testament to the company's engineering expertise. As Lucid vehicles become more accessible to the general public, more people will experience the benefits of this cutting-edge technology. The winter testing in Baudette, Alaska, and New Zealand has pushed Lucid's EVs to new heights, and the results speak for themselves.
