Beware of This New Scam Targeting the Elderly in NSW: Police Warning (2026)

A shocking scam targeting the elderly has recently come to light in New South Wales, Australia. The audacity of these criminals is appalling, and their tactics are truly despicable.

Police have charged two men for allegedly orchestrating a statewide scam, preying on vulnerable older adults. The scheme involved a clever distraction technique, where one of the men would approach an elderly woman in a shopping center parking lot, claiming there was a problem with her vehicle. While the victim's attention was diverted, his accomplice would stealthily make off with valuables from inside the car.

But here's where it gets controversial... the police believe this scam has been ongoing, with a total of 18 similar incidents reported so far. The locations span across the state, from Wagga Wagga in the south to Forster on the Mid North Coast. And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these crimes extends beyond the financial loss. The emotional toll on the victims, who are often already vulnerable, can be devastating.

The Riverina region was particularly targeted last weekend, with seven separate incidents reported in Wagga Wagga, Tumut, Goulburn, and Yass. Superintendent Andrew Spliet, the Commander of the Riverina Police District, emphasized the need for vigilance when approached by strangers, especially in regional areas where people are known for their helpful nature.

"Country people are often very obliging and willing to lend a hand, but unfortunately, there are those who seek to exploit this kindness. We've never seen anything on this scale before," he said.

On Wednesday afternoon, police arrested two men, aged 37 and 57, on the Mid North Coast. A search of their vehicle yielded vehicle wires, international passports, a significant amount of cash ($6,000), and receipts of money transfers. Both men were charged with a staggering 72 offences and denied bail.

The case is far from closed, as police are now seeking the public's help in tracking down two additional men wanted for questioning. Both are described as Caucasian men in their 40s.
