Ashwin Reacts: West Indies' T20 World Cup Squad Snubs Pooran & Narine (2026)

Ravichandran Ashwin's heartfelt reaction to the omission of two seasoned players from the West Indies squad in the upcoming T20 World Cup is nothing short of striking. As the tournament approaches, starting February 7 in India and Sri Lanka, the former Indian cricketer voiced his discontent over the decision not to recall Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Narine from retirement. Both stars, who have made significant contributions to the sport, had retired—Narine in 2023 and Pooran in 2025—but are still active in various T20 franchise leagues.

"I am genuinely disappointed that the West Indies selectors chose not to include Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Narine in their lineup for this World Cup. It is crucial to engage in discussions with players like them and persuade them to participate in such a monumental event. Excluding both Pooran and Narine from the squad raises questions about the team's strategy going into the World Cup, and I'm puzzled by it," Ashwin expressed candidly on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin, a dedicated admirer of West Indies cricket, believes the governing body needs to rethink its strategies when preparing for significant tournaments. He stated, "I hold a deep admiration for the West Indies team. They possess remarkable talent. However, the planning process and sometimes even the infrastructure in the Caribbean seem inadequate, which surprises me. I see immense potential for West Indies cricket, but there must be a reevaluation of how they strategize and prepare for World Cups."

Despite being two-time champions, the West Indies have faced a series of challenges, having won fewer matches than they have lost since their disappointing exit from the Super Eight stage in the last edition in 2024. Nevertheless, as they head into this new tournament, there are positive developments, particularly the rise of their captain, Shai Hope, who has matured into a versatile T20 batsman.

The Windies have occasionally showcased the fierce competitive spirit and explosive batting that once defined their dominance in the shortest format of the game. However, they have often struggled to secure victories in closely contested matches. Since their performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the West Indies have managed to win only 14 out of 43 matches, suffering 27 losses, while two games resulted in no outcome.

Now, they find themselves in Group C, sharing the stage with formidable teams such as the defending champions India, as well as Nepal, Scotland, and Italy. Their journey in the tournament will kick off against Scotland on February 7 in Kolkata.
