VJMC shows off some of Japan’s finest

The Honda 450, with its double overhead cam, was a clear indicator that the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers were going all in on bigger-displacement bikes, says Sean Carrigan, a board member with the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club and the Cincinnati regional field representative.

VJMC is one of the classic motorcycle clubs with bikes on display at the BikeBandit.com AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Indian Motorcycle at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, near Lexington, Ohio.

Also participating are the Bridgestone Motorcycle Club, the Louisville Vintage Motorworks, Café Racer magazine, the Indian 4 Cylinder Club, the Kawasaki ZL Owners Association and the Cincinnati Classic British Motorcycle Owners.

And the 450 being displayed by owner Bill Hovis of Cincinnati, Ohio, is just one of the market-changing motorcycles on display in the club’s tent.

Don Cecconi, of Union, Ky., brought his Honda Cub 70, an example of the highest selling motorcycle in history.

With more than 60 million units sold since its introduction in 1958, the Cub was a “first bike” for many people seeking an introduction to the motorcycle lifestyle, Cecconi says.

VJMC expects 40 club members to attend AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days over the weekend, with more than 40 bikes on display.

One model that is rarely seen at bike shows and other events is the 1975 Suzuki RE5M, Carrigan says.

An example, owned by Auburn, Ind., resident Todd Haifley, sits at the edge of the VJMC tent this year.

“We are extremely happy to be able to come back to VMD as a featured club,” Carrigan says.
