Heading south for vacation - need advice

I'm packing up the bike in the van and heading to fort liquerdale FL in a week. Depending on which way I go and the weather of course, I was thinking I could stop and take the bike for a spin for a couple hrs.
Are there any good roads around Asheville, NC? Will I be anywhere near Deals Gap?

Any advice is mucho appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Ashville is about 2 hours East of the gap.

Lucky so and so!

When are you leaving?

Ashville is about 102 miles east of Deals Gap. Perhaps 2 hours or a little bit more.

A nice road is to take 19 north out of Ashville and follow it through the town of Burnsville to rt 80 heading south. It would be about 42 miles from Ashville to where the southern section of rt 80 begins.

Rt 80 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can either turn south on the BRP and head back west towards Ashville and hit Mount Mitchell and then follow the BRP back into Ashville or you can cross over the BRP and stay on 80 until it runs into rt 70.

Rt 70 will take you either SW and gets you to the expressway 40 or take Rt 70 east to 221/226 which will also take you to the expressway 40. Take 40 west back to Ashville.

Rt 80 is considered to be very challenging, twisty and up and down the mountains.
Mount Mitchell has a great view and is supposed to be the highest point east of the Mississippi river.

How long will you be in Ashville? Just a bit or for a few days?
I can put you in contact with someone who can give you a better selection of roads if you will be there for a few days.

Have fun!
Be safe!
Take pics for the poor people you left back here!

So if i take 75 south to Knoxville I'll be close to the gap?? I'll just be passing through on the way to florida.

Hopefully the weather is decent on the way down or when I'm coming back to check it out.

If you like, you can get to the Gap from Knoxville.
You take 129 towards Maryville.
Continue south on 411/129, taking the 129 split to the SE.
You will hit the river, keep heading east on 129 and you will be on the Dragon,
Remember to watch for cops.

If you continue on 129, past Deals Gap, you come to the town of Robbinsville.
Head west on 143 and you are on the Cherohala skyway.

http://www.cherohala.com/

Continue on 143, whose designation then changes to 165, heading towards Tellico Plains.
You can then take 411 or 360 north (the nicer road, ending in the city of Vonore), back to highway 411 and then north back up to Knoxville.

However, this loop will take more than 2 hours. So plan accordingly and you also have to check the weather.

Have fun!

Oh, to answer your initial question, yes, you can get to Deals Gap from Knoxville.

Going down through Maryville on 129, it is approx 54 miles to the Gap. Perhaps an hour and a half to get there.

I'm new here, but may I suggest stopping off at JenningsGP? They have very regular track days at a good price with minimum bike prep. It's on 75 about 2 miles inside the FL state line and 3 miles off the highway on exit 486. A typical track day is $150.00, $130.00 if you pre-register and $110.00 on Mondays whether you pre-register or not. There are instructors on staff at no addditional fee. $5.00 gate fee per person, camping is free as are the showers. Here's the website and if you are interested help you out way way I can. Contact me here or via email or I can PM you my tel#. Rjohns88@gmail.com

www.jenningsgp.com

(Now you have to go after all that typing I just did)
