So how does the scam work?

So I put this set of couches for sale on craigslist. 150.00 just to try to ward off the idiots. Well I was wrong. Within minutes the flurry of texts start coming in. Offers to pay asking price plus, the whole bit. So people who know me know I canít resist making a deal and having fun with craigslist idiots. So I engage full on with several. The flurry of texts ensue and I am typing out a flowing river of bullshit. So much so that I start to renig on the deals, sharing that I found out these couches were from my great aunt who passed and that they are worth thousands. I settle negotiations with one internet gentleman. We will call him James because thatís how he referred to his internet self. James tells me he is priority mailing a cashiers check and once it clears he will send moving company over to pick up. I am just loving this and tell him to overnight it as I have competing offers. He says it will arrive in two days.
I come home today and there is the envelope, tracking on it and all. I open this thing and staring at a cashiers check for $995. Lol
Now what?
What are the chances this is real? I looked up the cu online it was sent out of and itís legit. The sig on the check isnít a wet one, which is sketchy.

How should this play out?

Do I cash it and just let the clearing process drag on?
Did I really just convince someone to buy this thing for a mint?
Are my Jedi powers real?

I think it's a trap.

I would take it to the bank and ask for the bank to check the balance that the account was drawn on to see if it is legitimate.

I closed an account at one bank and deposited it in my new credit union. They wouldn't give access to the funds for 7 days. I asked why and they said fake cashiers checks are super common.

Like you, I've always wondered how those scams work if they are willing to wait for the cashiers check to clear.

Looks like I need to quite my current job and start something in the sofa industry. Was considering the Petro chemical industry but money doesn't just "flow" like that there.
Any chance I can buy your sofa inventory, I have a check and have sent you money before like that ;-).

Why not take the checks to the bank and ask them what can be done to be certain the amount clears 100% in your account?
