Sick Baby =(

Some of you are aware of this and most of you aren't, but our (almost) 6 month old baby Isaac is sick. And not just the regular kind. Since he was about 2 months old he hasn't been gaining weight "properly". In children this young it's hard to say just how much they should be gaining, but it's generally between half an ounce and a full ounce a day. Isaac will gain 3-5 ounces a month. He grows in height just fine for now, but that could easily change.

After much deliberation we agreed to get his blood drawn. The results that came back were abnormal in most areas, the most dramatic being his liver. All of his liver enzymes were highly elevated, some as much as 3 times the normal amount. His pediatrician sent us to a pediatric gastrointerologist whom we will see Monday. In the mean time Isaac gets a belly ultrasound tomorrow morning to check out his organs, and has been labeled "failure to thrive", meaning we could feed him bacon double cheeseburgers all day and he wouldn't gain weight. Generally this is caused by a GI disease, such as: cystic fibrosis (terminal), chronic liver disease, chronic diarrhea (I can never spell that word), GERD(he'll grow out of it), or Celiac Disease (lifelong intollerance of wheat, rye, barley, gluten).

Whatever it is, what we do know is that something in his body is prohibiting him from absorbing nutrients from food. It's very hard and tiring. He's currently visiting a different doctor 1-2 times a week and each time is more upsetting than the last. I'm posting here because it's hard to update each person individually on what's going on and we're looking for some support. A simple "we're thinking of/praying for you guys" goes a long way. Sorry this was so much to read, but we felt like you all needed to know and we need some friends during this. We'll try to keep you updated during this.

*Side note* For those of you who have seen Isaac, he is small, but isn't he happy?!? A few of you saw him over the weekend playing and laughing. Looking at how happy and developmentally advanced he is makes it extra hard to believe he's sick.

Ugh, its so hard to read stuff like this when it comes to kids. I personally feel your pain as we some challenges with our own son. It's a fight everyday but as a good parent you do the most you can and constantly explore the options with doctors hoping they get it right. Sometimes the simplest smile on your childs face just lets you know that they appreciate all you do and gives yoru the reassurance and strength to keep foraging ahead.

No one on this earth looks out for you like yourself... Failure to do that, and you fail yourself!

The only excuse you have is the one you make.

Wow, that sucks and I cannot even begin to imagine what you guys are going through. Thoughts and prayers, and fingers crossed that it is something easily resolved with medicine or time.

I'm gonna think positive with this since I had very high Liver enzymes.

Apparently numbers of a All day night drunk... BTW I rarely drink.

It turns out I had a Fatty Liver.

So hopefully the little guy just has a hard time processing fat.
