View Full Version : Fix it or ditch it? My orange barrel of a bike...

Ok, so I had fun last Thursday at bike night. Nice to see ya guys again. I'll be heading off to my new job June 19th. It's cycles of 6-8 weeks on and 2 weeks off. So I wouldn't be home very much to ride. Add in Michigan weather and I might never see the road on two wheels.
I was wondering if it would be worth it, in your opinion, to do the maintenance the bike needs. Here's what I'm dealing with...
Front rotors dangerously thin and warped:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/warped_rotor.jpg
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/front_rotor_thick.jpg
But front brake pad life looks ok:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/fb_pads.jpg
Rear brake pad look kinda thin to me:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/rb_pads.jpg
Will need new chain and both sprockets. The positive is I have a vortex front but need to buy rear and chain:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/rear_sprocket.jpg
Possible carb leak. Yellow and sticky deposits on kick stand side, possibly still from winter storage:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/carb_leak.jpg
Although she still looks good at 50mph/50ft:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n67/xboxdynasty/50mph_50ft.jpg
So parts I think i need are:
2x rotors front
1x rear sprocket
1x chain
1x rear pads
No labor would be needed as I am confident I can handle those few things. Any idea of a ballpark for those parts? It's only worth ~2000 and has 34k miles. My thought is to sell it and earn interest on the profits. Then after a year or two of working get something new or nearly new.
Oberons and an a ride if anyone feels compelled to take a closer look and help me out. I'll let you stick on the right side away from my chain .
Oberons after the ride of course.

Well, another thing to think about would be what caused the rotor to warp.
I had a wheel bearing that had to be replaced, so that might be something for you to think about, in terms of "things that I need to do".
Not hyper difficult, you take it to Andersons (Motown Powersports?) and they do it for $40 or so, tire off the bike.
If you feel you really need to part with your bike for a year or 2, you might as well sell it as motorcycles, as with many toys, are not good financial investment vehicles.

Thats probably why I was the front end felt shaky on the freeway and when I checked it today axle was tight and tire at correct pressure.

Are you trying to kill yourself on that thing? Holy crap, you do realize the sprocket should have teeth, not just little bumps :wtf:
http://www.motorcycletoystore.com/sport/images/uploads/cat5_rr_compass_large.jpg
That is what a sprocket should look like.
I'll look the bike over for you, but honestly wouldn't want to be responsible for you riding it over here. :2cents:
Is that the same bike I sold you two years ago??

Yeah and thanks its been great by the way. Just haven't had the money to replace the normal wear and tear parts this season. New paint as had an encounter with the pavement my first year...
You want it back ?
Lucky that would be great if you could help me out. I'm gonna pick up a new rear sprocket and possibly chain chain if the old one is worn badly. I've got a new front already. That's why I wouldn't share lanes with anyone on Thursday. No use making a member eat chain :squid2::squid2::ban::ban::ban:
It started slipping today in range at high rev. Hah.
And yes I know what a new shiny $40 sprocket should look like.

I'm glad you have gotten a lot of good use out of her!! And no, the wife does not want it back. She is looking at a GSXR 600.
You really should replace the chain. I can see by the picture that the chain is pretty worn out. I always replace chains and sprockets at the same time!!
OH and, sorry to hear about the pavement surfing!!

It was a nice ride and calmed me down and kept me alive in the long run.
Yeah I know about the chain thing just trying to be stingy.

When/if it snaps, it could end up costing you a lot more :thumb2:

I've never personally seen it but I hear that the chain can wrap around ones ankle if it breaks. Not to mension major damage to the bike itself.

To body work? Psh 3 weeks after I had it painted I was on a crappy road in Hamtramick, go figure. Lower cowling screw must of loosedned itself and hole thing slid down and drug on pavement!
But yeah as I said getting that stuff done.

One member had his water pump shattered last year, I can't imagine what it would feel like if it hit your ankle.
John Hopkins lost his chain in the MotoGP race today, it was spinning down the track for a while, one other rider rode over it :jawdrop:

Well, to be fair Chris, that was a Kawasaki.
What can you expect?
I wonder who their chain people are???
They can't be happy with that!

Please, please. Can't blame an after market chain on kawicrapy. BTW 520 best?
I'm gonna take the front wheel and sprockets off tonight. Get that bearing and chain kit I dearly need.

It is kind of doubtful that a breaking chain would be able to snag an ankle, if the rider's feet were where they are supposed to be.
That being said, a chain break can damage the engine cases, as in destroy them.
Or the chain will simply unwind from the front sprocket and lay on the ground, or the chain could become wrapped up in the rear axle, dumping the rider instantly.
So, it pays to make sure your chain is in good condition.
The Kawasaki chain simply layed down on the track, a lucky thing for Hopkins.
The commentators said that that hardly ever happens.
Remember that when you change chains, they also recommend you change at least the rear sprocket. Most people change out both sprockets so they get the maximum from the new chain.
Like I said, I have never personally seen it just heard about it.
I find it real difficult to believe also but I wouldn't want to take the chance.

I have a few sets of rotors I would let go cheap, I may also have a stock chain and some sprockets. Give me a call 586-759-4735.

If the bike is paid for, I would certainly fix it and keep it. Then I would save for another bike. That is how you build your collection....:D

Maybe you should ask him to install the new chain and sprockets?
Good luck!

Good choice on replacing both sprockets n the chain
That chain looked pretty bad, with all new, or almost new, you'll get proper wearn life outta all three.

Guess it depends on your riding. For typical MI riding... 34k... you should have plenty of life left in them.
xboxdynasty
05-22-2008, 04:23 PM
ya. I've only had it for 5-6k and my riding doesn't cause much wear. I would like to say that I ride wheelies for miles and rev limit it all the time :squid2:
But don't especially now with more experience.
I cleaned out the garage today and found a rear rim complete with tire, sprocket (in good shape) and rotor (also in good shape) that I bought for your bike when my wife owned it. I forgot I had it so if you want it it is all yours. If you don't I will put it on eBay and sell it. Either way, just let me know.
