Discussion is under way to set up some clinics or demos on different motorcycle maintenance, repair, upgrade, customization topics. Below is a list I started, I would like to hear ideas from others, and then we'll do Poll on which ones to tackle first.

Suspension Tuning
Fluid/Coolant Change
Brake Pad Installation
Safety Wiring
Installing a new chain (w/o breaking the tools)
Winterizing
Fork Seal replacement
Chain Tension (You don't need to remove the wheel to properly adjust a chain)
Setting up a Trackbike, or streetbike to take to the track
Tire Machine Demo
Steel Brake Line Install
Auxiliary Power

Also, in most of these areas, I can help you if you arrange the time with me.

This is awesome. I would also like to see: Installing an aftermarket body kit, radar detector, Large rear sprocket for wheelies, Neon Lights, extended swingarm, and how to polish frames and wheels.

Thanks.

That would be a good one! Although unless u want something custom you can just get a powerlet outlet. Speaking of which one of us needs to get over their HQ and set something up.

The trackbike setup idea sounds like a good first post.
It's all fresh on your minds. Mandatory mods, items, track inspection needs ect. and then maybe creature comfort stuff for trackside tailgating ect.

Then maybe a club member that specializes in touring can post one up on those needs,
Then a club member for bling mods........like crome swingarms, iridium double bubbles, detailing.....

It would make sense to learn suspension setup. Bad suspension is a cause of most peoples problems on the street and track.

Chain adjustment - can't be to tight or to loose....

Fluids and winterizing are big too!

I would say to consider safety control before worrying about radar detectors and lights and shi#t

How about riding techniques? Slow speed maneuvers like navigating through a parking lot? I know I can use more practice.

take the MSF advanced course or go to a beginner track day

The Ride Like a Pro course offered by Alpha Training in Lansing is good for the slow speed stuff. The instructors are all Michigan State Police motorcycle officers.

Alpha Training can also provide the beginner MSF training. They have a 7 acre paved parking lot. Same deal as with the Community College, pass the course and you are road certified you just have to take the written test for your endorsement.

Anybody else coming out for the tire seminar?

Thats funny. I don't see it on the calendar. I faintly remember chuck asking if anyone would be interested in doing one, but then it kind of died out. When was it decided that Saturday was the day? I would have liked to attend this, but I will be out of town. Must be top secret. :sissy:

The earliest I can get there is 11:00AM. I have a previous engagement at 8:30AM.

But Chuck has some video to look at first. So if people get there early they can see the video and then witness the tire change.

I'm heading home to remove the wheels now.

FYI RADAR DETECTORS DON'T WORK ON BIKES!!!

Mine came with a cobra wired up. The generator coils create an electrical field when you rev the engine. Sets it off every time. Took it off and got rid of it.

Even motorcycle specific ones seem to have this problem.

Think it might depend on the setup. Natedog's has saved us more than a couple times. Think he's got a motorcycle specific whistler.

I'll keep an eye on the upcoming posted clinics and demos.

I would have loved help with my first oil change! It went okay....
Something is a little off and I couldn't get the plastics to line up quite right but I forced it together because it is too nice out and I just wanted to ride.

Now that is done, learning to do the fluid/coolant change would be great!

Of course any other regular maintenance I should be doing,

I want my bike to be a hobby, not just something to ride so I am all for learning. I can manage with instructions from the internet, but I don't have the confidence it was done exactly right.

I am also still interested in doing beginners track day with my own bike so prepping it is of interest too.

plus its always better to see it done in person once or twice. When you put your plastics on are you tightening bolt by bolt or just getting all a thread or two tight first? This seems to help on my busa but my problem is the fairing stay is tweaked.

Almighty,

I only had problems with the one side. It was odd. I could only line up two of the three bolts. (on the side, not the underside which connects the two pieces together) The third was going to be off no matter what. So I went ahead and tightened down the two and used 125# of personal torque to get that third. Of course now there is improper tension on the plastic. Nothing too serious but it seems odd and I am sure it is just something simple. Again, a second set of eyes would have been assuring.

Maybe if I can make it to the next clinic (of interest) someone can take a quick look.

Thanks!

I'll be setting up my suspension tonight and also doing 2 or 3 other bikes. If anyone wants to travel over to my house I'd be glad to help them do theirs as well. Sorry for the short notice, I'll be doing it again after I get out and ride mine a little then I can fine tune it. I'll be sure to let everyone know a little more in advance.
